Throughout her years as a performer, percussionist Peggy Benkeser has been surprised at the number of people who approach her after performances and confess their secret desires to drum, dance, perform and paint. For one reason or another they have never followed through on these dreams. Kitchen Chaos is her response to these unrealized desires. This is a series of six works performed as a single music-theater work.
Pauline Oliveros’ Sister Dreams, one these six works, is written for the electronic instrument called the Mallet Kat. The performer uses various mallet techniques to trigger different samples of the composer’s other works over a continuous backing soundtrack.
“It has been extremely rewarding for me to work with such wonderful composers. Each has challenged me to grow musically and supported me in the development of my one-woman show. The composer have been open to my input in the compositional process and have worked with me to create new music that is a unique contribution to contemporary percussion repertoire.”
